wigging out ii (and a half)
So my friend F and I went for my appointment this afternoon. F was terific and asked lots of very good questions, some of which I'd never though of and others of which I'd hought of but completely forgotten. There were no try-ons, but the Fake Hair Lady (FHL) spent a lot of time explaining different types of Fake Hair and matching colors and so forth, and this week she's going to order European human hair falls from two companies (Georgie and Shevy) in a few colors each for me to try on, we hope on Sunday. F said she'll come back with me for that appointment, and if I decide that I'm going to take one of those, FHL will do the cutting and styling.
I wonder...can I bring Julian along to the appointment? It's private, and FHL herself will have her hair covered, so it seems logical that he could come.
On a related note, I feel the need to emphasize that the fake hair you see me wearing in my earlier post is not mine. It's very pretty and all, but it looks much prettier on my friend Leah, for whom it was purchased.
part of a series: I, II, branching out, III, IV, sub-V, V . . .
Does that mean you aren't coming with me in Brooklyn? :(
I'm sure you could call FHL and ask her if your husband could come along. ...I am being good and posting my comments on the blog, like you requested. ;)
If you want Julian's opinion, for sure bring him (yeah, you should probably call and warn FHL first, just to be polite). I have definitely made my husband (even when he was still my chosson) express an opinion before buying a sheitel, not that I was offered much choice the first time, in NY from out of town!
I remember that trip! Three of us, all kallahs, but me just the other side of marriage. And I was offered absolutely no choice. It was only many years later that I realized that the sheitel I bought then didn't even fit me properly! Even warned, the FHL didn't manage to find any large caps, and what did I know? She asked me if I was planning to cut my hair, and we all assured her that I had! We made it work, and I still have that sheitel, umm, 9 years later? You can tell I wore it so often if I didn't manage to wear it out yet!
But as much as I prefer the feel of human hair, I switched to synthetic for two reasons: price and convenience. (I get to pick the color, the cap size and the style.) Understand that I'm the type who would go have her hair cut in a salon, give very specific instructions on what I wanted, then go straight home to wash and restyle my hair, because I never liked the way it was done professionally. (Cut was fine, style not.)
Okay, mostly price.
Anyway, Shanna, I think I understand your ambivilance about taking the plunge. In a way, that's also why I am so not a sheitel person. Although I wear them for "dress-up" occasions, I much prefer to only wear a sheitel in a sheitel setting: Where everyone else is wearing one too, or at least will know it's a sheitel. I don't like looking like I'm not covering my hair anymore than you do.
Wow, Shanna, your facial expression in those pics is really compelling. You seem just thrilled about all of this.... :-)
You're wonderful, dearie. You know why you're doing this, and you're doing the right thing, attempting to be yourself in the manner that involves the least possible number of compromises and personal betrayals. And I still believe what we discussed a long time ago, which I won't repeat here because I don't want to word it the wrong way and have people misunderstand, but I still believe it.
*hugs and kisses* - we believe in you, babe!!
another bites the dust... a shame.
OOSJ - I am far from happy with this solution. If you have an alternative, practicable solution, given the totality of the circumstances (geographical location, line of work, ethical obligations, point in my career), I'd love to hear it.
Do you want to borrow mine? Seriously, I won't be wearing it anytime soon. I can overnight it to you if you want. But it's dark brown and shoulder-length.
I'm loving this series. You do look very, em, resigned, in the pictures with the fall--but it's actually very nice. I agree that shorter would probably be good.
